Heat is the enemy of an engine. PTH OIL has one of BEST High Temp High Shear (HTHS) performance measurements found in any motor oil.

Trimming costs in high-performance motor oils have brought unwelcome quality and high-performance compromises. Specifically high sulfur content in base oil and low shear stability is a root cause for additives to fall out of suspension and leave your high revving investment grade engine at risk.

Shear stability is a measure of the amount of viscosity an oil may lose under operation. Oil experiences very high stresses in certain areas of the engine such as in the oil pump, camshaft area, piston rings and other areas where two mating surfaces squeeze the oil film out momentarily. Most multi-grade engine oils contain special additives called viscosity index improvers which are composed of very large viscosity controlling molecules. As the oil passes through the engine the molecules are permanently sheared or torn apart over time. After a period of time shearing, the oil will lose its ability to hold up to the same flow as before since the viscosity improvers are breaking down causing the oil to thin down in grade.

Once this happens there is less film strength between mating surfaces so it doesn’t take much for the oil to shear. Therefore creating more heat which attacks the base oil even more the oil begins to thicken up due excessive levels of heat. The broken down viscosity improvers now become a contaminant which added to the existing oil will thicken and ultimately cause sludge.

After the base oil has sheared or squeezed out, the last line of defense is an additive that puts down a barrier film. These barrier film additives were reduced in motor oils in 1996 to help preserve catalytic converters meeting new industry specifications and requirements. Adding just barrier additives to an existing oil causes the blend to overload, so the level of detergents can’t do their job and fight the acids produced by the engine and will therefore oxidize.
